Youngkin’s interview discussing the plane crash
Gov. Glenn Youngkin was on NBC’s Today Show this morning to discuss the plane crash that happened near Reagan International Airport last night. In case you missed it, a regional passenger jet flying under the American Airlines banner collided with an Army Blackhawk helicopter.
There were 64 souls on the plane and three on the helicopter. The collision happened near the airport, and both aircraft fell into the Potomac River.
Sen. Louise Lucas, D-Portsmouth, announced during the Education and Health Committee Thursday morning that American Airlines informed her that there are no survivors from the incident
Youngkin was asked what questions he wanted to see answered in an investigation of the incident.
“I just want to be very clear — the most important thing we'll do today is the recovery effort and supporting families,” he responded. “That support for the families will extend for a very, very long time. There are questions, and the questions need to be answered because, of course, as the Secretary of Transportation reported this morning, everything was routine, and, of course, it wasn't routine in the end because of this tragic collision.”
“We just need to find out what happened and that is going to be the work of the NTSB,” he continued. “I've instructed our entire administration, the Airport Authority and all of our first responder teams to support fully that investigation.”
Youngkin said he has been in contact with D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and Maryland Governor Wes Moore.
“I've been with Mayor Bowser this morning and spoke with Governor Moore and we've had a chance to interact with the White House team that has been so focused on this,” he said. “Everyone is going to support this investigation with full cooperation to make sure we understand what happened. Yes, this is a crowded air space, but it's a safe air space. Air travel in the United States is the safest air travel in the world and we just need to understand what happened in this circumstance.”
This will continue to be a developing situation.
