New information from VPAP shows fundraising totals by legislators during the 11 days this year they were allowed to fundraise. They are not allowed to fundraise while the General Assembly is in session.
Republican Majority Leader Terry Kilgore raised the most money in the House with $70,225 raised between Jan. 1 and Jan. 11. House Democratic Leader Don Scott raised close to that at $69,500.
In the state Senate, Sen. Bryce Reeves (R) raised the most with $82,500. Senate Republican Leader Tommy Norment raised $77,500.
Primary opponents state Sen. Jeremy McPike (D) and Del. Elizabeth Guzman each raised the third most in their chambers. McPike raised $56,733 and Guzman raised $36,000.
Former Delegate Jimmie Massie has passed away. He served in the House of Delegates for 10 years from 2008 to 2018. He represented part of Henrico County as a Republican.
Speaker Todd Gilbert issued the following statement Thursday:
“I am shocked and grieved to learn of the sudden death yesterday of our colleague, former Del. Jimmie Massie of Henrico. No one who served alongside him during his 10 years here in the House will ever forget him. While he was known outside the Capitol for his business success and deep involvement in his community, in the House he was known for his commitment to formulating good public policy. His love of detail was matched only by his outgoing, gregarious personality that made him a joy to serve with. To say that he will be missed among his former colleagues is a woeful understatement. I ask that every Virginian join me in lifting up his wife Elizabeth and their children Jimmie, William, Becky, and John in prayer as they mourn the loss of a loving husband, a devoted father and a fine public servant.”
