Coons is out
Virginia’s Superintendent of Public Education is gone after announcing Friday that she is leaving the position. The Richmond Times-Dispatch first broke the story Friday evening.
The chief deputy secretary of education, Emily Anne Gullickson, was tapped to serve as the acting state superintendent.
This comes a few weeks after reporting from the Richmond Times-Dispatch showed that the Virginia Department of Education failed to release new history standards for public schools that were supposed to be delivered last year.
Rumors were constantly circulating of unhappiness within the VDOE under Coons.
The department also lost a lot of key staff members during Coons’ tenure.
She is the second superintendent to leave during Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s term.
“As the administration moves forward with its education agenda, we are confident that Acting Superintendent Gullickson, with her experience in the Youngkin administration and her background as a teacher and advocate for students, will lead a seamless transition,” Youngkin’s communications director Rob Damschen said in a statement to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
