Spanberger announces more support from Democrats
While Sen. Louise Lucas, D-Portsmouth, says that Democratic gubernatorial candidate Rep. Abigal Spanberger has not done enough to reach out to Black Democrats, Spanberger keeps bringing in new endorsements — including three members of the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus.
Spanberger announced Friday morning that Dels. Alfonso Lopez, Candi Mundon King, David Reid, Michael Jones and Rae Cousins are backing her for governor.
Mundon King, Jones and Cousins are all members of the VLBC.
“Abigail Spanberger has been a leader who doesn’t just show up — she rolls up her sleeves and gets to work,” King said. “When Abigail began representing our community in Congress, she didn’t just show up — she truly listened. She took the time to understand our struggles, our hopes, and our needs. But she didn’t stop there. Abigail got to work, delivering real results for our infrastructure, improving public safety, and expanding mental health services. Her leadership has made a meaningful difference in people’s lives. That’s why I am so proud to endorse Abigail Spanberger for Governor. I know she will lead with the same dedication, heart, and results-driven approach to strengthen our public schools, invest in our HBCUs, lower the cost of living, and tackle the maternal mortality crisis. Abigail Spanberger is the leader we can trust to move Virginia forward and deliver for every family in our Commonwealth.”
Lucas has been pushing Rep. Bobby Scott to consider a run for governor. He has said he is considering it, but many insiders believe that he will not actually jump into the race.
“I haven’t ruled it out,” he told Punchbowl recently.
Spanberger is the only Democrat seeking the nomination right now.
Lucas said she “bleeds blue” and will back whoever becomes the eventual nominee, but she is actively working against Spanberger ahead of a potential primary.
Lucas’ close ally and consultant, Ben Tribbett, has been railing against Spanberger on social media, as he has done for years.
