Richmond is electing a new mayor this year

Richmond will elect a new chief executive in November as Mayor Levar Stoney reaches the end of his second term. Five candidates have jumped into the race — all running as an Independent.

Richmond City Councilor Andreas Addison; former City Councilor Michelle Mosby; Dr. Danny Avula; who served as Virginia’s commissioner of the Department of Social Services until launching his campaign; Maurice Neblitt; and Harrison Roday, a non-profit founder and former Democratic staffer, are all running.

“So far, it's anyone's game. To me, the big question is whether the higher-profile candidates can translate their fame and/or money into actual grassroots support,” says Richard Meagher, a political science professor at Randolph Macon College.
