Nick Freitas announces retirement from House of Delegates
He’s endorsing Karen Hamilton for the position.
Del. Nick Freitas, D-Culpeper, announced Thursday night at an event that he will not be seeking reelection to his seat in the House of Delegates this year.
“Nick is retiring at a time when he is more popular than ever in his district but opening up his seat for a new leader to carry the conservative mantle forward,” said Joe Desilet, a longtime staffer for Freitas.
Freitas is endorsing Karen Hamilton for the Republican nomination. She is married to former VA-07 Republican candidate Cameron Hamilton.
“With his popularity and the notoriety of the Hamilton family after Cameron’s campaign last year, I expect Karen will have no issue securing the nomination to succeed Nick,” Desilet said.
HD-62, the district that Freitas represents, is a strong Republican district, according to VPAP.
Freitas was first elected to the House in 2015.
He secured the Republican nomination to run against Rep. Abigail Spanberger in 2020 but was unsuccessful in the general election.
