We the People for Education is dedicated to preparing and supporting Virginia's next generation of school board leaders. Tragedy in Richmond

An 18-year-old was killed by a gunman at his high school graduation on Tuesday in Richmond. His father was also killed and five other people were shot after the graduation near the Altria Theatre and Monroe Park on VCU’s campus.

Amari Ty-Jon Pollard, of Henrico, is facing second-degree murder with more potential charges.

18-year-old Shawn Jackson and 36-year-old Renzo Smith were the victims.

A 31-year-old was shot and sustained life-threatening injuries.

Four other males, ages 14, 42, 55, and 58 were shot but are expected to be okay.

All Richmond Public Schools are closed Wednesday.

“Thinking of everyone in our City tonight,” Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney said Tuesday night. “We will heal, we will recover. We will continue to keep our community updated as we learn more.”

  • Video of Stoney’s press conference after the shooting.

  • Lieutenant Gov. Winsome Sears crashed the press conference and made political statements as firetrucks who were on the scene to help victims are still in place with emergency lights on behind her.
