Four score and five years ago, Richard L. Saslaw came into this world… probably a little pink, snuggly, and (hard to believe it) speechless!
It is rumored that as a child, his quick wit and mischievous nature often got him into trouble at home and in school. This curiosity and evolving charm undoubtedly contributed to his future success and longevity in politics.
Fast forwarding to when he joined the ranks of his legislative contemporaries like Thomas Jefferson & Patrick Henry, he often would regale the Senate with Huck Finn-like tales from his youth. These encounters frequently became the basis for a riveting stemwinder, be it in committee or on the floor, which coincidentally had more footprints from him working the room than time spent in his seat.
During his 48 years of public service, he celebrated more than half his birthdays at the General Assembly – often with cake and song. Therefore, it is only right for us to send birthday greetings to Aloha Dick on this momentous 85th birthday.

Mehta announces run for House of Delegates — calls Earley “Dead last for effectiveness”
After losing to Rep. Rob Wittman, R-VA01, in 2024, Leslie Mehta announced Wednesday that she is running for the House of Delegates. She is running in Chesterfield’s HD-73, where the Republican incumbent, Del. Mark Earley, was first elected in 2023.
“Every Virginian deserves access to quality, affordable healthcare, well-paying jobs and reasonable prices, and leaders who will put people over partisan politics,” Mehta said in her announcement Wednesday.
She attacked Earley, calling him an ineffective legislator.
