Legislators call on Youngkin to sign paid family leave bill
Legislators are calling on Gov. Glenn Youngkin to sign legislation establishing paid family and medical leave. The bill would require the Virginia Employment Commission to establish and administer a paid family and medical leave insurance program with benefits beginning January 1, 2028.
Del. Briana Sewell, D-Prince William, and Sen. Jennifer Boysko, D-Fairfax, spoke about the legislation in Occoquan Monday.
“Establishing a Paid Family and Medical Leave program will allow small businesses to compete on a level playing field with big corporations, ensuring that they have the ability to attract and retain our workforce,” Sewell said. “I urge Governor Youngkin to stick to his promise to ‘keep Virginia winning’ and sign this winning legislation for hardworking Virginians today.”
The legislation patroned by Sewell, HB2531, passed both chambers of the General Assembly on February 12 by a 21 to 18 vote.
“More than ever, families depend on women's earnings, and yet women often are the ones that have to leave the workforce to care for their loved ones, for their children, for their spouses, for their aging parents,” Boysko said.
Youngkin’s deadline to sign or veto legislation is on Monday, March 24.
Sen. Marsden and Del. Cole endorse Rouse
Sen. Dave Marsden, D-Fairfax, and Del. Josh Cole, D-Stafford, endorsed Aaron Rouse for the Democratic lieutenant governor nomination.
Marsden: “With chaos coming out of Washington that’s putting our region at risk, we need strong leaders who know how to stand up and get things done. That’s why I’m endorsing Aaron Rouse for Lieutenant Governor. I’ve seen first-hand that Aaron never backs away from a tough fight, and he has both the track record and new vision we need to lead us forward."
Cole: "I’m supporting Aaron Rouse for Lieutenant Governor because he’s the leader we need right now. Donald Trump and Elon Musk are turning Virginians lives upside down, and I know Aaron has the vision and leadership to go toe-to-toe and deliver for our state. From City Council to Senate, I’ve watched Aaron get the job done, and he’ll do it again as Lieutenant Governor."
