Democrats attacked Kiggans for recent silence on same-sex marriage. Here is a quick look at what her time in the state Senate looked like on this and other related issues
State Sen. Jen Kiggans (R-Virginia Beach) is a geriatric nurse practitioner and former Navy helicopter pilot. She is also the Republican nominee in Virginia’s second congressional district looking to unseat two-term incumbent Rep. Elaine Luria in November.
The Democratic Party attacked Kiggans Tuesday and accused her of being a far-right extremist for staying silent on issues like same-sex and interracial marriage in Virginia. This is a talking point after SCOTUS overturned Roe v. Wade recently leaving Democrats worried about what other laws could be overturned by the conservative court.
Last week, the House of Representatives voted to enshrine marriage equality into federal law — something that Luria says she was proud to vote in support of on the floor. “When I was deployed on combat ships in the Navy, I never once looked at the person to either side of me and asked who they loved,” Luria said. “Virginia has played a critical role in the freedom of Americans to marry who they love, and I was proud to vote today to enshrine marriage equality into federal law. The right of same sex couples to marry has been settled law for more than a decade, and I will continue fighting to protect the rights of all Americans, including the right to marry who you love and the right to choose.”
