Coyner, Taylor: We would happily vote for the Tennessee contraception bill

In the past year, the national debate over reproductive healthcare has been filled with misinformation and political opportunism. But here’s the truth that rarely makes headlines: in Virginia, Republicans have repeatedly put forward good-faith legislation to protect women’s access to critical medical care — and Democrats have blocked it, not because they oppose the substance, but because they want the fight.
This year, Republicans introduced bills that would have made it 100 percent clear that in vitro fertilization (IVF) is legal in the commonwealth. Del. Kim Taylor’s bill aimed to prevent the kind of heartbreaking situation that unfolded in Alabama, where a state supreme court ruling effectively halted fertility treatments and threw countless families’ plans into chaos.
