The race for a new Northern Virginia Senate district is heating up as Jennifer Carroll Foy is pushing back against Hala Ayala’s attack ad saying she is proudly endorsed by controversial state Sen. Joe Morrissey (D). Ayala’s campaign is also pushing back against Carroll Foy’s ad saying she is the union candidate.

Ayala and Carroll Foy are in a tough primary for a new district created during redistricting in 2021 with no incumbent.

Both Ayala and Carroll Foy were elected to the House of Delegates in 2017 and they both sought statewide office during the 2021 election cycle. Carroll Foy resigned from the House to seek the Democratic gubernatorial nomination and she eventually lost to Terry McAuliffe. Ayala did not run for reelection to the House because she was the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor but she eventually lost to Winsome Sears.

Morrissey announced his endorsement of Carroll Foy last year but she wants to set the record straight with a long statement saying she does not support him. He represents Carroll Foy’s hometown of Petersburg and is currently in a tough primary battle against Lashresce Aird.
